What is the difference between the CYSL Recreational (Rec) and Coronado FC Competitive programs?
The CYSL recreational program is open to all children ages 4-10 who wish to learn to play soccer, or have played soccer but prefer to play at a recreational level for a 9-10 week season. The Rec program provides a very affordable opportunity to play soccer.
The Coronado FC competitive program is open to children ages 7-19 who try out for and are selected to a team. The Coronado FC competitive coaches are professional, licensed coaches, many of whom played soccer at the collegiate and/or professional levels. The competitive program runs for 8-10 months, and requires a significant commitment (including a financial commitment) on the part of both players and parents.
During what time of year is the Rec Program?
Rec soccer has two seasons – Fall and Spring – each approximately 9 weeks long. The Fall season runs from September to November, and the Spring season runs from March to May.
How are players divided into teams?
Players are assigned to teams by age/ year of birth and skill set with the goal making all teams as evenly matched as possible. CYSL has a Rec Director that organizes our coaches and rosters the teams.
Whenever possible, teams are single gender; however, when there are insufficient numbers to have single gender teams, the league reserves the right to have co-ed teams.
Where are the practices and games?
For the Fall season, all practices and games are at Tidelands Park. U12 teams play in Interleague games, which are a combination of local off-island venues as well as home games at Tidelands.
For the Spring season, all practices and games are at Coronado Cays Park.
Can requests be made to play with a specific coach, friends and/or neighbors?
Requests may be made, but we cannot guarantee any requests.
How much playing time will my child get during games?
The Rec program is an opportunity for all participants to learn about soccer, develop their skills, and have fun. Therefore, coaches will make every effort to ensure each player gets to play at least 50% of each game.
When will my child practice?
Practice days and times are set by the coach in accordance with field availability. Each team will have a minimum of one 60-minute practice session per week during the season.
What do Player Registration Fees cover?
Rec Player registration fees cover a variety of expenses, including a uniform kit for your player, team pictures, and referee fees. Registration fees for rec soccer also provide financial support to assist in administration of the Coronado FC Rec program.
What if my child changes his/her mind after registration, and decides not to play soccer?
Fall Soccer: If you withdraw your child by the last day of the regular registration period, you will be given a full refund less a 10% administrative fee. During the late registration period up to August 31st, you will be given a 50% refund. After August 31st, no refunds will be given.
Spring Soccer: If you withdraw your child by the last day of the regular registration period, you will be given a full refund less a 10% administrative fee. During the late registration period, you will be given a 50% refund. After the end of the late registration period, no refunds will be given.
Do coaches get any training?
Yes; all coaches are required to complete the online courses for Concussion Training and a Youth Module certification appropriate for the age groups they are coaching.
Do I need experience as a soccer player to be a coach?
No experience is required.
Are there other volunteer opportunities besides coaching?
Each team needs a team parent to take care of administrative details, creating a snack schedule, organizing an end of season party, etc. If interested in volunteering, please contact rec@coronadoyouthsoccerleague.comCoaches
Teams are coached by a combination of volunteer parents and Coronado FC Coaching staff. All volunteer parent coaches are required to complete online Concussion Training, along with a background/livescan screening.
CYSL Recreational Soccer is committed to teaching youth the fundamentals of the sport. Our staff actively communicates with parents, volunteer coaches, and other area soccer programs to find new and more efficient processes to make CYSL Rec a better program for all. We also provide weekly training clinics, practice session support from the Coronado FC competitive coaching staff, and an opportunity for many players to participate in an All-Star recreational tournament outside Coronado at season end.
As a volunteer coach, you determine your practice schedule and time, and your child is placed on your team.
All coaches receive practice gear for use during the season, including soccer ball bag, soccer balls, practice pennies, cones and a complimentary shirt from CYSL.
If interested in coaching, please email rec@coronadoyouthsoccerleague.com
All volunteer coaches must undergo mandatory background checks through the LIVESCAN program. Coronado FC pays for this service for each volunteer coach. The process requires valid identification, SSN, and fingerprint. If you have already completed LIVESCAN for Coronado FC, then you do not need to complete it a second time. If you have not completed LIVESCAN with Coronado FC, but have completed LIVESCAN with another organization, you still MUST complete LIVESCAN with Coronado FC. No other organization is authorized to release your LIVESCAN results due to privacy laws.Fields
CYSL Rec games and practices take place across various fields throughout Coronado. Please check our fields page for addresses and directions.CalSouth Age Matrix
When determining the age group for a season, the year the season ends should be used for determining the play level. Also note that the format “U followed by age” really means that age and younger. For example, U8 should be read as 8 and younger. The matrix below begins with the 2016-17 season when Cal South implements the initiative into their competitions. We Commit To
